Apparently everyone in Europe and most people know in Sofia Bridge the Eagles. According to its inhabitants, is the starting point and meeting place for the whole city, not only because it is a special place for reference, but because most of the buses have their central stop there. It certainly is a place of high boiling, from sunrise to sunset. You reach him through the boulevard of Tsarigradsko. The bridge is beautifully decorated with four bronze eagles on columns that are giving the same name. It was built in 1891 on the river Perlovska, although the Bulgarians call the river channel.
Facing the Bridge of the Eagles is the building Tzarevetz of pink original, built in 1930. On your left is the artificial lake of Ariana, built in 1879. During winter, the lake’s surface freezes, which are held on the promenade with skids. During the summer is very common to see people walking on water bike on it.
We are now approaching the building Hali. Is the best place to buy in Sofia. You can find shops of all kinds, from food to souvenirs. It is also the place of meeting and conversation of the inhabitants of Sofia. The building was built in 1911, and became the first covered market across Bulgaria. Its design is very much like the Les Halles market in Paris. At the top of the building is an old clock from 1915, and their sound to give the hours with their bronze bells is one of the symbols of the city.
Another curious and symbolic places of Sofia is the monument to Popa, the Priest, a small triangle enclosed in the central streets of Vassil Levski, Graf Ignatiev and Patriarch Eutimii. It’s where young people gather in the city. This monument to Patriarch Eutimii is always crowded. Opposite him was seen the Odeon cinema, surrounded by the gardens of the place. Full of terraces, cafés, where we see university study or resting, walking.
Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky
One of the most impressive buildings of Sofia is home to the University in the city center. The building was built in 1924. Nevertheless, it is curious because many of the Bulgarian university must study subjects like art or medicine outside the country, since there are no universities in these disciplines in Bulgaria.
The city of Sofia is seated on the Vitosha mountains. From anywhere in the city we can see the background, hanging from the peak Cherni Vrah horizon of 2290 meters. An excursion to Vitosha Mountain Park will make us much more pleasant our stay in Sofia.
One of the unavoidable visits to the Bulgarian capital is being done at the Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky, in the square of the same name. It was built between 1904 and 1912 and represents one of the best parts of the twentieth century Bulgarian architecture. The interior is simply stunning: Italian marble, alabaster African wood and frescoes of the best Bulgarian and Russian artists. The underground crypt is one of the largest collections of icons in the world. The view is spectacular from the street, with its domes of 50 meters in height, and its bell strikes twelve, one of more than eleven thousand pounds of weight.
The Church of St. George, red brick, is the oldest building in Sofia, perhaps the tenth century. Today houses the Museo de la Ciudad. And if St. George is the oldest church, the Church of Saint Sofia is the oldest Orthodox church. It was the church that gave its name to the city in the fourteenth century.
How to get there?
Sofia Airport is located 5 kilometers from the city. From there many trains, buses and taxis can bring you to the capital. It is undoubtedly the best way to access Sofia, because the trains in this part of Europe, for example, is often quite slow and the distances can be a bit heavy. All this in large measure due to the stops to be made in the borders of individual countries to control smuggling.
With all this we hope that now you can say you know a little bit more in the city of Sofia.
