Madrid is a cosmopolitan city with many theaters, cinemas, opera houses and more than 50 museums and galleries. It is worth visiting el Palacio Real and la Puerta del Sol (which is the Km 0, the point from which all distances in Spain are calculated) and the Plaza Mayor with its shops, pubs and inns.
The green area of Madrid most important is el Parque del Retiro, an old place, with the graves of the Spanish kings. Among its attractions is the lake with boats, the Botanical Garden, and the summer festivals. To the west of the city center is la Casa de Campo, a huge green area with swimming pools, tennis courts, trails and a zoo with an aquarium, near the amusement park.
The south of the city is the Biological Park, a new theme park dedicated to biodiversity, where you can find many flags to recreate different ecosystems. 40km north of Madrid is El Escorial, where you can visit the Monastery of San Lorenzo del Escorial, which includes a church, the Royal Palace, a monastery and a famous library. It is close to the Guadarrama mountain range, where you can ski in the winter. Other tours are recommended Alcala de Henares, the University and famous hometown of Miguel de Cervantes (author of Don Quijote) in Catalina de Aragón, and Aranjuez, with the precious summer palace known as la Casita del Labrador.
